Previous studies (Novarino 2000; Novarino 2001; Novarino et al. 2004; Novarino et al. 2005), has figuring the important rule of protected forest of Taratak for Malayan tapir and other endangered Sumatran wildlife such as Sumatran tiger and Serow. This project is continuation studies that targeted to monitoring population of Malayan tapir and improving participation of local people on conservation.

We will continue monitoring of Malayan tapir population on larger area to find out their home range, which still unconfirmed till this time. This project also will conduct simultaneous with environmental education program, that perhaps will enhance tapir conservation awareness. Public awareness and encourage local people also was listed as top priorities recommended during the Malayan Tapir PHVA workshop in Malaysia (2003).

There are two main activities that will be conducted during this program, first monitoring of Malayan tapir and other wildlife inhabit the study area, secondly to improve local community participation on wildlife conservation.

- Monitoring of Malayan tapir will be conducting by using camera trapping technique. The identification of travel corridors between areas will be assessed by following and mapping their track.

- Improving local community participation on conservation will be providing by environmental education. This program will consist of:

- Moving library will be conducting as media for environmental education. Team will come to elementary school in Taratak village and purchasing several children books which telling about the nature and conservation. By using interactive games they also will introduced with nature and conservation.

- Youth conservation club will be promoted during the project. Member of club will be informed with basic conservation issue and trained for simple field technique. They are also will be encouraged for the camera checking.

- Reforestation will be focused on the salt lick area and to reforming the corridor between forest patches along the water stream. Native tree species and was identified as Malayan tapir food will be planted in this project.

Final Report

Read more about the activities undertaken and findings of this project in the report for RSG continuation (Second Year), titled “Population monitoring and conservation of Malayan Tapir in Taratak Forest Reserve, Sumatra, Indonesia”. This project previously was supported by RSG in 2004, and also supported for the second year monitoring program (2007).

In the second year program, we conducting monitoring program by using camera traps and also public awareness which conducting by moving library activities, coloring competition, Tapir baby naming contest, and promoting our activities to young conservation club. Due to get more attention on Tapir conservation in Indonesia, we are also send paper for published in national scientific journal and magazine. We also make a presentation in several times in campus, seminar, and local national conservation bureau office.

As also mentioned in the report, for the future we want to expanding our monitoring program into larger coverage areas in West Sumatra landscapes and also elaborating more the biology of Malayan tapir.
