Human-Monkeys Conflict Management and Conservation in Mt. Uluguru

This is the two phase project, the first phase focusing on human-monkeys conflict management for 14 calendar months while the second phase will focus on initiatives of community based conservation for the period of one year. In the first phase of this project, More specifically will be: (i) Participatory assessment of the effectiveness of existing traditional crop protection techniques (ii) Develops on farm ecological friendly techniques for monkeys’ control against crop damage e.g. use of dogs to drive out monkeys (iii) Organise workshops in collaboration with Pest Management Centre of Sokoine University of Agriculture to local farmers to demonstrate improved/new crop protection techniques.

The project implementation will involve local communities, who will practices and evaluate the new cheap techniques of monkeys control without killing them, direct in their farms and thus, adopt it. Additionally, the project will provide direct opportunities to local people to see the ecological impacts of the current lethal techniques. Given that the project will be educative and researching, and its implementation carried out on the farms with local people, the impacts are expected in short time. The ecological based monkey control techniques will attract more farms and thus, provide permanent solutions to monkeys-human conflicts. Consequently, monkeys conservation in the mountain.
