The middle ranges of the Himalaya cover the largest area of the Gangetic headwaters. This project intends to make known the Lepidoptera of this area. Comparison with data gathered during the previous two projects from the outermost range will help understand similarities and differences between the plant and lepidopteran communities in heavy rainfall areas comprising the outermost range and southern face of the main range on one hand and moderate rainfall areas comprising the middle ranges on the other.

The middle ranges are ecologically severely degraded and this project will provide baseline data for efforts to introduce forest ecosystems in the area in the years to come.
