L'hoest's monkey are highly threatened diurnal primates due to habitat loss ( high level of habitat disturbance of original forest-composition) and modification due to human activities( ilegal hunting for food by local communities) at Palabek –Kal forest lands over recent past, these posed the greatest threat to the continued survival of primate species mainly L hoest's monkey and have greatly impacted on the survial of the monkeys. And this have further potentially influenced the ability of these primates to live successfully.

There is need to empower rural people in community with skills, knowledge and ability to recognise the importance of forest conservation in the national economy. Effective forest management and conservation education for primate survial can't be achieved without first determining the extent to which the flora and fauna may be at risk.

This project will focus on conservation of these primates in particular while sensitising the rural people living around Palabek-Kal forest reserve. It will educate local communities on importance of wildlife conservation (eco tourism), restore habitat and food requirements of the primates, stragegies for managing the ranging patterns. nature conservation center will be established to monitor and assess the vulnerability and the resilience of this species as a result of the habitat loss due to encroachment on the forest and ilegal hunting by local communities. Conservation and habitat management strategies will also be established, determine abundance and distribution, dietary preference and ranging pattern of l'hoest monkeys.

Project Update:February 2010

From November 2009 to January 2010, four consultative meetings were held with local communities living in Palabek kal. The purpose was to sensitize them and build awareness about the importance of conserving nature in general, e.g. habitat restoration or protection, and the primates in particular. A community conservation management committee was formed and trained so that they can play a leading role in mobilizing rural communities as well as disseminating relevant information. A series of field travels were made to all the villages surrounding the forest reserve.

From 15th January to 13th February 2010, information regarding the distribution of the primates was gathered. Parallel line transects of 5 km long each and 500 m apart were set on each of the 5 x 5 km square forest blocks. Numbers were determined by censuses conducted while walking along the line transects. We are in the process of designing best conservation strategies for these primates. However, the main problem now is dry season and most the primates are migrating towards the valleys leading to unhabituated and undisturbed wilderness of Padwat and paracele.
