The project aims to help create awareness and conservation of otter in Nepal. As opposed to
many conservation efforts for mammals of threatened species in Nepal, there has been no conservation plans for otter conservation. This study will be carried out in the Narayani River which includes the Chitwan National Park in Nepal, a UNESCO world heritage site. The outcome of the research will create a tremendous effect on the way of understanding the values and importance of indicator species in river basins especially to policy makers that could contribute to incorporate the issues of conservation in designing the strategy and conservation plans of otters to ensure viable population through conservation.

Objectives of the study is to:

(1) determine distributional status of otter in the area;

(2) generate awareness and education amongst and between conservationist, local community,
civic societies, natural resources managers, policy makers and scientists;

(3) review and develop understanding of otters as an aquatic indicator species (e.g. ecosystem health, policy development, historical facts, present activities such as killings and poaching for fur trade).
