Fishing practices have been considered as the main reason for depletion of the marine living resources in general and the coral dwelling species in particular. Unfortunately, there were very few published data available about the status exploitation and trade that may effectively assist the policy makers and managers to cut down the degradation rate of the coral reefs along the country. This proposed project aims to: (1) To assess the exploitation intensity targets on the keystone reef animals, (2) To explore the market chain for the trading of the endangered rare coral reef animals, (3) To enhance the public awareness about the mitigation of the exploitation forces on the coral dwelling species. In order to come up with above objectives, several activities will be organized:

1. A field survey collecting the information about the gear types, fishing ground of the several keystone reef animals such as hard coral, live reef food fish (seahorse, grouper) and giant clam, marine aquarium species will be carried out at Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces. The method approaches will be fishery questionnaire delivery at the selected fishing villages and review the database reserved at the local offices.

2. Estimation of the over fishing level bases on the market information (body size, maturity level) and catch per unit effort (CPUE) data stored in the local fishery management units.

3. Application of the economic matrix aspects to determine the supply – demand cycle for the endangered reef animals and predict for the coming years.

4. Designation of the leaflet sets and posters to be used in the public awareness programs such as material references for school teacher in the environmental subject.

Project Update: December 2007

The 1st fieldtrip has been carried out in October 11 to October 25 at the central provinces of Ninh Thuan Province (Ca Na, My Hung and Vinh Trung fishing village), Khanh Hoa Province (Vinh Truong, Cau Da fishing village, Dam souvenir central market and Nha Trang whole sale wet market), Phu Yen Province (Phu Hoa and An Dong Fishing village). The field staffs spent the time to deliver the questionnaire form to ask the reef users filling up (they are fishermen, and traders of the reef animals such as coral, giant claim, live reef food fish and marine aquarium fish). Several local authorities in 3 provinces belonging to the Department of Fisheries have contributed the statistical data in recent years about the exploitation status of reef in their vicinity for further review and promise to have close collaboration with the project activities when needed.

In this fieldtrip the field staffs did the survey in depth about how the coral reef resources have been depleted in recent years at the central provinces based on examination of several damaged fishing practices such as diving with the compressor (harvest all the things that diver can see underwater), coral digging for production of cement and souvenir purposes, three layer reef net with very small mesh size to hunt the reef aquarium species. In addition with that the field staffs also tried to explore the trading network of the coral reef animal at the study sites. After finishing the trip, the project members will spend the time for data analysis and prepare the materials for the public awareness programs that expect to carry out on March, 2008.

Project Update: September 2008

The 2nd fieldtrip has been carried out at the second week of March, 2008 at the Ninh Thuan Province, where was considered as the most “hotspot “ of intensive harvesting on the coral reefs. The purposes of this trip were to organize two onsite training workshops that focusing on two groups:

(1) 20 people represented for fishermen who their livelihoods depend on the harvesting of coral dwelling resources and the management staffs at the community based coral protected area of Thanh Hai commune – Workshop activities intend to provide the basic technical skills for livelihood alternation in the surrounding waters of the Thanh Hai Commune (Maricultute technique transferring: fish floating cage, abalone farming and Algae Kappaphycus sp farming)

(2) 100 high school students at the Thanh Hai high school, Thanh Hai Commune – Workshop activities intend to provide an overview about the benefits of the coral reefs and coral animals to the life of the people in the coastal areas, threats to the coral reefs and how to reduce the stress on this valuable ecosystem
