This new project aims to use the available information for a legal implementation of the discussed management plan. The training of the local communities for future self-management of their natural faunal resources is a major aspect of the plan. The team wants to take the local communities towards a participative development of a system of self-management for the resources by the local communities.

Project Update: February 2005

During the first year of the study, hunting off-take was monitored by PGS. 3,033 animals (14,829kg) of 36 species were hunted in an estimated area of 111.52 km². Only 8 % of the bushmeat was traded and created revenue of about 1,900 fcfa (less than 2£/ month).

In the process of the management of hunting by local community, members of the CWMC were trained by PGS. Two seminars and 4 workshops added to the practical sessions on the field organize by PGS under the supervision of the local representative of the Cameroonian authority in charge of wildlife were used for the purpose. They were train on basic techniques and methods of mammal survey. 60 km of line transect were cut and data’s collected. The CWMC found that: 17species belonging to 5 orders were observed directly or indirectly during the survey. Through participative discussion amount the CWMC members 19 species that were not seen during survey were declared caught into traps by hunters. At the same time the 12 different species were sometime seen in the forest but very difficult to be caught. Wildlife potential in their forest is high but need to be managed.

This is the first action carried out by the CWMC being the first step into the self-management of their resources. Next logical phase is the elaboration of the management plan and it consolidation.
