This study will gather information about the status and distribution of snow leopard, co – predators, their prey and carnivore – human conflicts in Kargil and Drass areas. It will help to identify the distribution pattern of large carnivores in the study area. On this basis a landscape level management can be planned in these areas to conserve the existing wildlife on a long term basis by reducing conflicts and threats to species.
The intensity of conflict will be quantified on the basis of number of livestock killed, human injuries, and their frequency. The responsible factors such as human encroachment, increasing livestock populations, grazing, fuel wood and other anthropogenic factors will be quantified. Based on the findings of this survey appropriate site specific mitigation strategies will be proposed.
Food habits of large carnivores provide the information about carnivore – human conflicts and quantification of prey base and socio-economic condition will suggest the mitigation strategies.
