The development of an urban wetland conservation program is built on an outdoor nature education program in Muara Angke. The project will create awareness for urban wetland conservation among a wide range of stakeholders. Through engaging schools, universities, neighborhoods, city administration, corporate groups and the general public, the project will facilitate the development of a local conservation constituency.

By relying mainly on a network of volunteer educator supported by 3 facilitators, the project will enlist local ownership and ensure project sustainability. JGM has so far received more than 1000 requests to join as green volunteers to become urban environmental educators, which demonstrates the strong desire of Jakarta’s residents to improve the environmental conditions in of Asia’s most polluted city.

The project will continue to support waste separation, recycling and composting in neighboring slums and we will conduct monthly monitoring of birds in Muara Angke, as well as conduct regular investigation of local bird markets for protected bird species to facilitate enforcement through the local nature conservation department.

Project Update: August 2009

In the first month of this project we started to do routine monitoring to get water bird and another animal data in Muara Angke Wildlife Sanctuary, including information on frogs, snake, and lizards. We also did bird surveying for species threatened with extinction in Jakarta, and as a result we found Javan plover chicks at Metro Marina Ancol area in August 20. Unfortunately the chicks were not there the next day when we checked again. We assumed that the wild dogs had taken them because we found a lot of dog footprints in that location.

Besides research and monitoring, environmental education activities are beginning. In collaboration with Coca Cola Jakarta we made 'edu mobile', which is a car containing materials about Jakarta wetlands. This car also visits schools and brings the campaign of the importance of Jakarta wetlands.

Project Update: February 2010

We have recorded several species of birds in Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve not recorded since 2000. These include spotted kestrel (Falco moluccensis), copper-throated sunbird (Nectarinia calcostetha) and purple-backed starling (Sturnus sturninus). Moreover, based on the survey results in January 2010, we have mapped the distribution of black-winged starling (Sturnus melanopterus) and Javan coucal (Centropus nigrorufus) in Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve and Angke Kapuk Preserved Forest. In December 2009, we held environment education facilitator training for the public, to encourage them to take part in the campaign of preserving Jakarta's coastal environment.
