This project aims to work with subsistence communities throughout the islands of Vanuatu to assist them to manage their marine resources. Fish is their main source of protein and the villages have noticed diminishing catch numbers and sizes of fish and have requested education and monitoring resources to establish Community Conservation Areas with the Environment Department of Vanuatu.

Community Led Exclusion of Invasive Cane Toads from Breeding Sites of the Endangered Fijian Ground Frog (Platymantis Vitiana) on Viwa, Fiji Islands

This project has two research aims, i) undertaking scientific research to eliminate cane toads from breeding habitats of the endangered Fijian ground frog (Platymantis vitiana) [FGF] on Viwa Island inorder to enhance the reproductive output of the FGF; ii) engaging Viwa community in developing a management action plan utilizing cultural protocols and norms. Through these two activities we intend to strengthen protection and growth of Fijian ground frog population on Viwa Island.

This study addresses the objectives of recovery plan of the Endangered Mao (Gymnomyza samoensis) by gathering ecological information on the factors that have led to the current decline of this important species. The study will investigate both the breeding biology and causes of nest mortality.

The primary aim of this project is to find out if Chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) occurs amongst endangered Fijian ground frog (Platymantis vitiana) populations. This key investigation has to be completed before we can establish a conservation management plan for P. vitiana.
