Final Report

April 2005

Since NDPEHRD (Niger Delta Project for Environment, Human Rights and Development) received the RSG grant last year, the group has carried out the project activities such as holding of consultative meetings and dialogue with leaders and target groups in the community, identified degraded areas in the mangrove forest community to establish a pilot mangrove nursery, to carry out the re-vegetation and demonstration to the locals.

Problems:
Since the execution of the above project activities part of last year and this year, further project activities have been suspended due to local crisis. Worst still, nearby communities of Odioma and Nembe are locked in a conflict over a portion of mangrove forest land. The crisis had continued unabated, leaving the waterways unsafe to travel (water channel to Sangana, our project community).

Wayforward:
Recently, NDPEHRD's board held a meeting with folks from Sangana about the growing state of insecurity in the community. The meeting resolved that due to the protracted crisis the project be shifted to another community. The project team had embarked on initial visits to some communities in the Niger Delta. And BARA-NZOR village in the Bodo community in the Gokana local Government Area of Rivers State, was chosen as the new project site.
