The Sclater’s guenon, endemic to a small region of southern Nigeria, is the most endangered primate in Nigeria and the most endangered guenon species in Africa. However, very little is known about this small, arboreal monkey. By conducting geo-spatial analysis and field surveys with Nigerian university students, the team plans to illustrate how habitat loss and fragmentation have affected Sclater’s populations and determine the species’ conservation status.
The projects expected outcome will make an important connection among habitat disturbance and the viability of small populations in fragmented landscapes, resulting in a conservation action plan for the Sclater’s guenon.
