During the period that takes the reproduction season, from June to August 2005, were maintained and substituted 30 artificial nest boxes previously installed. Material to make 40 more nests were acquired, 10 of which substituted damaged ones. The boxes were installed mainly on locations were the loss of trees and natural nests has taken place. After being installed the artificial nests are being monitored weekly through the reproductive season.

During the monitoring (October/2005 – April/2006) we will keep track of the development of the offspring through the survey on biological, behavioural, and veterinarian information, up to the post fledging period. The artificial nests will be plotted in maps through geographic information system. At the end of the reproductive season the reproductive success will be evaluated. All installed nests will receive a new inspection for cleaning, restoration and, if necessary, substitution for new ones.

The checking out artificial nests will be carried out between June and October 2006 after the reproduction period. In this period, will continued maintenance and/or the restoring and the construction of new artificial nests. For this, all the reproduction area will checked for the conditions of the artificial nests and also to verify which were the necessary measures for its maintenance. Material to make more nests will be acquired. The boxes will be installed mainly on locations where the loss of trees and natural nests has taken place. After being installed the artificial nests will be monitored weekly through the reproductive season, from October 2006 to April 2007.

Project Update: April 2006

As a result of the reproductive season of 2005/2006, it was observed 23 active nests. In the whole area studied, 57 eggs were laied, in which 18 were abandoned, 1 were predated and 38 resulted in chick, as explained table 1.

As an experiment 10 nests were installed in the mainland, and no one were explored or occupied.

Ilha Rasa reproductive site is the area that obtained higher occupation rate of artificial nests (47%), was successful in 66% of laied nests, and resulted in 24 births. Ilha das Gamelas obtained occupation rate of 50%, was successful in 75% of laied nests, and resulted in 9 births. Ilha Grande site obtained lower occupation rate, 40% of installed nests, was successful in 44% of laied eggs, and resulted in 5 births.

Project Update: August 2006

On the last report we informed that 38 nestlings were born occupying 23 artificial nests. 22 nestling of those took first flight.

Monitoring of artificial nests per breeding site of the Red-tailed Amazon, along the coastline of the state of Paraná- 2005/06 breeding season was conducted.

During June and July were evaluated artificial nest conditions of nests installed on Ilha Rasa site. 4 new artificial nests of PVC were installed, in order to replace wood nests in bad condition. Also, 10 wood nests were installed. In total there are 40 artificial nests installed on Ilha Rasa site, for the next reproductive season.
