The marine natural resource of Vietnam, in general, and Khanh Hoa province in particularly have been decreasing rapidly. There are many marine ecosystems such as coral reef, mangrove, seagrass being destroyed for living purpose of local communities. One of the main reasons for this disaster is the low level of awareness of the fishermen and communities on long term benefits of those ecosystems. Consequently, increasing the awareness of communities on natural resource is necessary and urgent.

By now there are some marine protected areas (MPAs) established in Vietnam such as Hon Mun, Ran Trao, Cu Lao Cham.  The local communities of those MPAs have recognized that the reduction of fish resource is caused by over-fishing and the use of destructive fishing gears such as dynamite and poison.

Aims of the project are to help people in Khanh Hoa gain more understanding of some important marine ecosystems such as coral reef, seagrass and mangrove. It will help people increase the knowledge on the structure of these ecosystems; the long term profits that sustainable use of those will bring back and the consequence of destroying those ecosystems.

The general survey at Van Phong bay, Khanh Hoa province will be conducted. Then the some villages will be chosen for education. The target communities are fishing villages. Methodology is based on the PRA and RRA. Questionnaires will be conducted to collect the data. The collected data will be analysed using EXCEL and SPSS softwares to evaluate the awareness of the target communities at Khanhhoa province. When the awareness levels have been defined, the education activities will be conducted for each people group.

Project Update: March 2006

The team has been doing the teaching and the propagada to raise the awareness on protect marine resources of the two selected communities. The main groups have been chosen which were fishermen and pupils.

We printed the posters and leaflets and lecture which the content imphasize on the importance of the marine ecosystems how they related to present and future earning living of the coastal people. And give them the reasons why we should keep our marine environment and living resources as well as the main marine ecosystems. Poster, leaflets and lecture are prepared in Vietnamse with a easy, simple words for poeple to read and understand. I attached photos of the poster and the leaflet, but they are in Vietnamse. They content of those things are the importances of the main marine ecosystems: Coral reefs, Mangroves, and Seagrass beds; and how to protect them.

At the same time of the teaching and propagada we are setting up the network of collaborators. The collaborators are the seclected teachers at the primary and secondary schools. They will teach pupils more often as the extracurricular activities and the network will be developed and expanded in the selected area.
