The Anamalai-Parambikulam elephant reserve in the Western Ghats is the second largest reserve in India with and contains 6% of the country's total Asian elephant population. Commercial plantations and high human density in the Valparai plateau of Anamalai hills have resulted in habitat fragmentation and patchy distribution of resources.
A previous study on the plateau has shown that habitat alterations have led to frequent human-elephant conflicts and there is an indication of change in the behaviour of elephants. This study focuses to minimize the human-elephant conflict based on elephant resource distribution and their behaviour in conflict situations on the Valparai plateau.
