Project Update: May 2010

From February to April 2010, several activities have been conducted to achieve project goals, including a desktop analysis and gap analysis for fisheries data, fisheries surveys to fill the existing gap, and discussions with stakeholders on this project.

The desktop and gap analyses were conducted in cooperation with a team of local government, Bogor Agricultural University, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Results from the desktop analysis showed the need for fisheries data collection such as number of fishing gear operating at Weh Island and also fish catch data.

A fisheries survey was conducted as a result of desktop analysis and a recommendation of the gap analysis. The survey was conducted in cooperation with the local university (Syiah Kuala University), Bogor Agricultural University, Pugar Foundation and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The discussions with these parties aimed to present the project and we expect feedback about the activities that will be implemented. The parties that were invited to the discussions were; fisheries services (Sabang District), planning services (Sabang District), Panglima (customary organization), and the local community.
